Program Description
Overview
Window IV is NRIF's primary vehicle for supporting the innovation pipeline from early prototype through validation, pilot deployment, and market entry. It funds technology and social innovations that address documented Gambian challenges and have clear pathways to commercial or social deployment at scale. The window is designed to complement, not replace, private investment, and all grantees are expected to leverage co-funding or in-kind contributions to demonstrate market confidence.
Innovation Stages Eligible for Funding
- Proof of Concept (GMD 50,000–200,000): Early-stage technical validation and prototype development
- Pilot and Validation (GMD 150,000–400,000): Field testing, user validation, and business model refinement
- Market Readiness (GMD 300,000–750,000): Scale-up, commercialisation support, regulatory compliance, and early market entry
Priority Innovation Areas
- Agricultural technology and food systems (agri-tech, post-harvest, cold chain)
- Health technology (digital health, diagnostics, telemedicine, community health tools)
- Clean energy and climate adaptation (solar, biogas, energy efficiency, climate-smart agriculture)
- Financial inclusion and fintech
- Education technology and vocational skills platforms
- ICT infrastructure and digital services
- Water, sanitation, and environmental management
Co-Investment Requirement
All Market Readiness stage applications must demonstrate confirmed co-investment of at least 25% of the NRIF grant amount from private investors, commercial banks, or other non-governmental sources. Pilot stage applications are strongly encouraged to show at least 15% co-investment. Proof-of-concept applications have no mandatory co-investment requirement.
Eligibility Criteria
Eligible Lead Applicants
- Registered Gambian startups (company registration under the Companies Act)
- Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) registered in The Gambia with fewer than 250 employees
- Innovation hubs, incubators, and accelerators registered in The Gambia
- Social enterprises with a primary social or environmental mission
Key Eligibility Conditions
- The innovation must address a documented Gambian challenge and have primary relevance to The Gambia's development context
- The lead applicant must be majority-owned (>50%) by Gambians or Gambian residents. Applications from diaspora-led businesses with active Gambian operations will be considered under Window X
- For Pilot and Market Readiness stages, a working prototype or proof-of-concept must have been completed prior to application
- Applicants receiving Market Readiness grants must provide evidence of confirmed co-investment of at least 25% of the NRIF grant value
- Purely commercial activities with no clear innovation or social impact component are ineligible
- Applications for import/distribution of existing products without significant local adaptation or innovation are not eligible
Disqualifying Factors
- Outstanding regulatory violations or tax arrears
- Prior NRIF grant in default or under investigation
- Proposal that primarily funds normal business operating costs
